All Day Long, On the Chaise Longue

But then again, what are you doing sitting down? You should be dancing on the sand at one of these five effortlessly cool beach clubs

Ever since Brigitte Bardot and Roger Vadim uncorked Champagne in the sand at St.-Tropez’s Club 55 while shooting And God Created Woman, the beach club has come to stand for an idealized stretch of sand — typically on the Med — where everyone looks great in their bathing suits while lounging beneath matching striped umbrellas. It has more than a whiff of the elite, though the idea of the lido dates back to the 1820s, when Italians added structure and comfort to an otherwise crowded seaside experience. (Two words: Changing lockers.)

Today’s global inventory of sun-drenched hangouts runs deep in both count and breadth, extending as far as Goa, India; Byron Bay, Australia; Cape Town; and Uruguay. Some are brought to you by mega-resorts and corporations; others are family-run (or family-friendly). Members-only Soho House is even adding beach clubs to its hospitality empire.

Vibes are varied but a few essential truths remain: The DJ could be playing French pop classics à la Jane Birkin or oontz-oontz bass…or both, depending on the time of day. Champagne is a prerequisite, topped with sparklers or not. There will be seafood, and possibly sushi. Sandals, bikinis, and flowy cover-ups are a must, as are dark-tinted shades for “incognito mode” people-watching. Where you choose to unwind matters — find your beach club match from our curated international picks below.

Potato Head Bali is part beach club, part cultural “village” on Seminyak’s upscale shores.
Comporta is stylish in a stripped-down, utterly unpretentious way, and so is its namesake beach club.
Visitors can get day passes to use poolside at Makani Beach Club, off the coast of Cartagena.

1

Scorpios Mykonos, Greece

The Backstory Created in 2015 by two nightlife gurus who wanted “inspirational gatherings” — aka low-key beach parties that ended by midnight (!) — this little bohemia on the Aegean Sea has been a cultural icon ever since.
The Vibe The aesthetic is agora, but a more organic and soulful “gathering place” than at other clubs in Mykonos. A Cycladic-style stone house sits at the center, while open-air terraces in 50 shades of beige — studded with wicker and rattan pieces, hemp canopies, and guests fully clad in linen — fan out to the beach.
Is That Brad Pitt?! Why yes it is, and there’s Bella Hadid decamping from her superyacht.
What’s Playing? Hypnotic house-music lineups for barefoot yogis.
The Future Bought by Soho House in 2019, Scorpios has since branched out to Bodrum in Turkey, and anticipates new editions in Tulum and Dubai in the near future. Creative programming has also expanded: Recently launched Encounters melds experimental digital artworks and AI with live art performances.

Potato Head Bali, Indonesia

The Mantra “Good times, do good.”
The Vibe Do most beach clubs kinda look the same? Maybe. But there’s nothing quite like Potato Head Bali, a Brutalist wonderland and cultural “village” sitting along Seminyak’s upscale shores, featuring trippy terra-cotta-colored brickwork and an eye-catching amphitheater made of colorful reclaimed window shutters.
What’s Playing? High-spec sound systems attract marquee names like neo-soul songstress Erykah Badu and producer Jamie xx.
Eco-Credentials There’s a no-plastic rule for the entire campus; a zero-waste initiative is up and running; and even art installations like a mountain of abandoned flip-flops sourced from Bali’s coast remind revelers to mind the planet.

3

Comporta Café Beach Club, Portugal

The Backstory Comporta is stylish in a stripped-down, utterly unpretentious way, and so is its namesake beach club, a stalwart for over two decades.
The Vibe Really just a glorified shack on an otherwise empty (and stunning) beach, where guests beat the heat under frilly black umbrellas or in hammocks with icy cervejas and caipirinhas in hand.
Come for the Food Chef Luís Carvalho’s Portuguese and Mediterranean menu of black-ink cuttlefish rice, fresh-caught oysters, and seafood stews is reason enough to swing by.
What’s Playing? A carousel of live DJs livens up the atmosphere — deep house being the main vibe — and the day- and nighttime program means the party rolls along after the sun’s glow fades.

4

Makani Luxury Wanderlust Beach Club & Villas, Colombia

Day Pass to Paradise Just 15 minutes by boat from Cartagena is Tierra Bomba Island, home to the handsome 14-villa beach resort Makani. Day passes are available for sun loungers and daybeds, exclusive-use plunge pools, and a tree-house-style cabana tower.
The Vibe Laid-back with earthy design: Think reclaimed wood, palm fronds, and open-air dining under an enormous thatched roof.
The Clientele Guests in seductive designer resort-wear lounge around the palm-tree-flanked infinity pool, or indulge in whole grilled lobster at the restaurant.
What’s Playing? Latin and global house tunes keep the pool scene thrumming, with the occasional international DJ hitting the deck for special dance nights.

Grand Africa Café & Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

The Backstory With Table Mountain glowing in the distance and the Atlantic at its feet, Grand Africa is the Mother City’s go-to seaside spot for both visitors and locals.
The Vibe Upmarket yet approachable, the former crayfish warehouse can host 1,000 casual-cool guests, with plentiful Parisian-café-style chairs in the restaurant and couches and loungers across the man-made beach.
Eyes Wide Open Eclectic sculptures by South African artists dot the property. Play “spot the boulder-size disco ball” on the rocky shore.
Pro Tip Lean into the South African wine list — we love the Warwick The First Lady Pinotage — in the early evening for a classic sundowner experience.
What’s Playing? Grand Africa is a popular spot for DJ concerts and events like Paradisco and Made in Mykonos, so check its Instagram for listings when planning your Cape Town getaway.
